Your Summer Outdoor Gear Checklist: What You Actually Need This Season
Category: Gear Guide | Reading time: ~4 min | Season: Summer
Summer in North Idaho is short, sweet, and packed with opportunity. From fishing the morning rise on Lake CdA to camping deep in the Selkirks to a Sunday afternoon on the lake with the family, there’s no shortage of ways to get outside. The key is being ready.
Here’s a straightforward checklist of what we’d recommend having in your kit this summer — no fluff, just the good stuff.
On the Water
-
Life jacket (PFD) — A properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life vest is non-negotiable. Adult and youth sizes in stock.
-
Polarized sunglasses — Game-changer for both fishing and general water time. Reduces glare, protects your eyes.
-
Sun protection — Sun Bum SPF 50 is our go-to. Don’t skip this on the lake.
-
Fishing license — Available in-store. Idaho requires one for anyone 14 and older.
-
Tackle basics — Soft plastics, spinners, and a good supply of hooks and weights. We can help you dial in what’s working locally.
At the Campsite
-
Layering system — Idaho nights cool down fast, even in July. A moisture-wicking base layer plus a mid-layer fleece covers you in most conditions.
-
Durable camp footwear — Sandals for around the site, trail runners or boots for hiking. Danner and Crispi both make excellent options for rougher terrain.
-
Headlamp — Sounds obvious until you don’t have one. Grab an extra set of batteries too.
-
Insect repellent — Mosquitoes can be brutal in lower elevation camps. Don’t find out the hard way.
For Active Days
-
Moisture-wicking shirt — Cotton is a mistake in the heat. A good performance tee makes a big difference.
-
Convertible pants or shorts — Versatile for hiking and around town. Look for UPF protection if you’re spending long days out.
-
-
Trail footwear — Proper footwear is the most important gear decision you’ll make for an active day outside.
-
Hydration pack or insulated water bottle — Staying hydrated in summer heat is serious. Bring more water than you think you need.
Family Essentials
-
Youth PFD — Kids’ life vests must be properly sized. We stock a full range.
-
Kids’ fishing gear — A simple, appropriately sized rod and reel setup makes all the difference for younger anglers.
-
First aid kit — Even a basic one. You’ll thank yourself.
